April 10, 2023 | People We Should Know: Ron Paul

John Rubino is a former Wall Street financial analyst and author or co-author of five books, including The Money Bubble: What to Do Before It Pops and Clean Money: Picking Winners in the Green-Tech Boom. He founded the popular financial website DollarCollapse.com in 2004, sold it in 2022, and now publishes John Rubino’s Substack newsletter.

Ron Paul didn’t grow into himself over the course of a lifetime. He seems to have emerged fully formed, a libertarian with total conviction and a head full of facts and turns of phrase. Here’s his younger self on the weaponization of the FBI …

… and the 2nd Amendment:

19 years ago he called for the end of NATO, just as the anti-Russia military alliance was inducting Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia — all near the Russian border:

The expansion of NATO to these seven countries, we have heard, will open them up to the further expansion of US military bases, right up to the border of the former Soviet Union. Does no one worry that this continued provocation of Russia might have negative effects in the future? Is it necessary?

We should not be wasting US tax money and taking on more military obligations expanding NATO. The alliance is a relic of the Cold War, a hold-over from another time, an anachronism. It should be disbanded, the sooner the better.

He opposed the doctrine of endless war:

And who can forget when he asked Ben Bernake if gold is money?

He ran for president several times, and in each case was the only candidate with a morally-coherent worldview. Watching the feckless political hacks on either side of him shoot each other snide glances when he proposed limiting government spending, bringing home our soldiers, and ending the Fed was painful but necessary. The rest of us had to understand the corruption and stupidity of the people who would go on to drive the US off the (now looming) financial/geopolitical cliff.

Anyhow, thank you Dr. Paul. You are the standard by which other US leaders have been measured and on every major issue, they were wrong and you were right. If only we’d listened …
