A widely overlooked benefit of improving energy efficiency and powering the grid with electricity from the wind, water and sun (WWS) is that it will reduce our overall energy consumption by more than 50% globally.  You can see how in the Solutions Project Earth graphic here.

In Canada, because we currently burn a lot of fossil fuels to produce, store and transport fossil fuels, moving to a WWS powered grid with battery backup stands to reduce our national energy consumption by an estimated 63% as shown here.

In transportation, using onboard battery storage to turn wheels is nearly five times more energy-efficient than using gasoline.  Volvo’s latest heavy-duty EV test truck uses half as much energy as its diesel counterpart, see Volvo’s heavy duty truck is put to the test.

In its first energy efficiency test on the Green Truck Route in Germany, a 40 tonne Volvo FH Electric truck maintained the same average speed as a corresponding diesel truck and had a total range of 345 km on one charge. The Volvo FH Electric test truck consumed 1.1 kWh per km which is 50% less energy than the diesel truck on the same transport assignment, making the all-electric truck a very powerful tool for reducing CO2 emissions.
