In Canada’s most populous province, Ontario, 27 regions will begin a gradual reopening today against the backdrop of stark scientific modelling that has predicted a third wave of infections and the potential of a third lockdown.

Several community-based outbreaks of the more virulent and vaccine-challenging South African variant have been confirmed in Ontario over the last week.  All 10 provinces have now reported at least one case of the variant first detected in the United Kingdom.

Modelling released on Feb. 11 showed that if public health measures are lifted, the highly transmissible U.K. variant will likely become the dominant version of the virus over the next month and could lead to as many as 6,000 daily cases by the end of March.  Social distancing discipline and masks remain essential.

There are growing concerns that the spread of more contagious COVID-19 variants could spark a third wave of the coronavirus in Canada as provinces ease restrictions.
