I believe food and energy prices have been excluded from cost of living calculations in the US for a number of years because they were deemed too volatile. Many other numbers used are quite subjective. For example, if a car now has anti-skid brakes, an entertainment system, etc, etc., the “increased” functionality offsets all or a portion of the increase in price which lowers inflation. Mish is quite correct in looking with suspicion at all the numbers.
