Jim: There are many legitimate criticisms of US defense spending but one has to know the specifics because sometimes there are exaggerations. For example, there was a lot of talk 15 to 20 years ago about a $900 toilet seat. That actually was the entire toilet assembly, much like what you see in a commercial airliner and that price was not unreasonable. For specialized tools produced in small number the price is going to seem out of line but that is because the items are not mass produced and the cost of making the tooling which makes the tools is spread over a very few items. As far as overall defense spending is concerned, please remember that is because the US has taken on much of the cost of guaranteeing the security of Europe and the Pacific. That had to be done after WWII because the US was the last man standing with any industrial capacity and money. It is time for a change now though.

I thoroughly enjoy your interviews during the week and find them entertaining and informative. Keep up the good work.

The government did this so as to guarantee profits for the military industrial complex and its financier, wall street who kick a portion of it back in the form of campaign contributions. Pure cronyism.
